5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a compound belonging to the group of amino acids. It is derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia, also known as African black bean. It is also naturally produced in the body from tryptophan—an essential amino acid obtained from food.

5-HTP is then used to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter often referred to as the “happiness hormone,” which plays a key role in regulating sleep, mood, emotions, and appetite.
