Uridine and its properties
Uridine is a nucleoside consisting of the nitrogen-containing uracil and the sugar ribose. Uridine monophosphate (UMP), in turn, is a nucleotide consisting of a uridine nucleoside attached to a single phosphate group. It is one of the basic building blocks of RNA (ribonucleic acid).

UMP is a major metabolite in cells and has many important biological functions. It is the initial nucleotide in the biosynthetic pathway of nucleoside pyrophosphates such as uridine diphosphate (UDP) and uridine triphosphate (UTP). These higher pyrophosphates are important for many cellular processes, including the synthesis of polysaccharides, glycogen, and protein and lipid modification. Research using uridine focuses primarily on analyzing its effects on the nervous system.
